The band Yellowjackets formed in the ruins of The Robben Ford Group and immediately gained a lot of attention for their debut album in 1981. Even then they took the legacy of Weather Report further and mixed it with influences from greats like John Coltrane and funky soul jazz rhythms.
The original members Russell Ferrante and William Kennedy, together with the other musicians, offer both impressive technique and a wonderful mix of different jazz and fusion styles. But it is still – as the London Jazz News critic wrote in his review – that Yellowjackets should be experienced live. On stage, their deep musicality and exuberant virtuosity come into their own.
Russell Ferrante – keyboards
