The Radiojazz group premiered in March with a sold-out concert at Berwaldhallen. Now it’s time again, this time with music composed, arranged and led by the British big band profile Nikki Iles. By its nature, the music is modern but firmly rooted in the big band tradition and has plenty of room for all musicians to shine. A whole evening for curious diggers!
Normally Nikki runs her own big band Nikki Iles’ Big Band with the cream of London’s jazz musicians. Her band includes drummer Ian Thomas and guitarist Mike Walker, who are also on the Fasching stage. Nikki is appointed this year’s Composer in Residence at the NDR Big Band in Hamburg. An extra detail is that Nikki turns 60 on May 16 – that’s certainly something we should celebrate!
For several decades, the Radiojazz group was the hub around which Swedish jazz music orbited, with names such as Arne Domnerus, Bengt Hallberg, Jan Allan, Georg Riedel and Lennart Åberg connected to the ensemble. Nils Landgren, since the turn of the year artistic director of Jazz radio at Swedish Radio, is now tasked with presenting the Radiojazz group as a regularly recurring part of the offer on Jazzradion, and each concert will have a new and unique cast of musicians.
