One of Southern Africa’s hottest bands is coming to Fasching with its mix of Zimbabwean rhythms, Afrobeat and Afrorock.
Mokoomba – the six-piece band from Chinotimba township in Victoria Falls in northern Zimbabwe broke through on the world music scene a little over ten years ago with the record Rising Tide, an album of original songs where they mix local music styles with influences from pop and pan-African styles, soukous, Afrobeat, funk and reggae.
Mokoomba has released three albums, toured the world and played with artists such as Hugh Masekela and Babaa Maal and at European festivals such as Denmark’s Roskilde, England’s Womad, Hungary’s Sziget festival and North Sea Jazz in the Netherlands.
Over a rich percussive groove, weaving guitar riffs and a richly braided vocal in which the whole band participates, lead singer Mathias Muzaza leads the band in lyrics written in Tongan, Shona and in English. Clear away the tables and chairs, polish the dancing shoes and prepare for a seven-hell swing with Zimbabwe’s young kings.
The concert is done within the collaboration: Fasching x Selam
