For German pianist Michael Wollny, the trio with bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Eric Schaefer serves as a constant in his otherwise ever-changing world of collaborations.
The three musicians share a seemingly inexhaustible musical vocabulary, an exceptional sensitivity in their interplay and the ability to constantly create new, exciting and dynamic music in the moment.
The trio is a unity of three distinct characters: Michael Wollny is considered one of the most important European pianists of his generation. In his playing, influences from jazz, classical music, indie pop, contemporary and early music merge into a personal style.
Wollny has played with drummer Eric Schaefer for more than 20 years and they share a deep familiarity with each other and an ability to constantly surprise and challenge each other. The foundation of the trio is laid by the American Tim Lefebvre, with his deep tone, strong groove and feeling for musical dramaturgy.
Together, Wollny, Schaefer and Lefebvre create music with dynamics and intense commitment.
Referring to the origins of the piano trio format, British Jazzwise Magazine notes: “The Michael Wollny Trio makes it clear that we live in the 21st century, not the 1960s!”
