Grammy-nominated jazz and blues singer Catherine Russell sings with a relaxed presence and clear timing manifested on eight albums of her own and on hundreds of recordings and collaborations in and beyond jazz circles with pop artists such as Madonna, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper and country folk such as Rosanne Cash, Tony Trischka and Sarah Jarosz.
Dad is jazz legend Luis Russell, pianist and bandleader who worked with both King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, and mom is Carline Ray, singer and guitarist in International Sweethearts of Rhythm, America’s first all-female band.
Catherine Russell comes to Fasching with her own band consisting of guitarist Matt Munisteri, pianist Roy Dunlap, bassist Tal Ronen and drummer Domo Branch. In the back, the Grammy-nominated record Alone together and the latest Send for me with the title track first recorded by Nat King Cole who had a hit with the song in 1957. “I love romance that swings”, says Russell about the record, which stands firm and healthy in the romantic swing tradition, exploring some of the American songbook’s lesser used evergreens.
