New York-based Ghost Funk Orchestra call their style psychedelic soul. With elements of jazz, funk, soul and rock, this intensely talented group comes to jazz club Fasching with their fifth album, A Trip To The Moon.
Ghost Funk Orchestra is the creation of composer and multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. What started as a solo project has developed into a powerful live band.
With a sonic kaleidoscope that defies genre specifications, but draws great influence from soul, psych rock, salsa and funk. The band’s unique blend of genres has led them to festivals such as Montreal Jazz, Treefort, Telluride Jazz, Otis Mountain Get Down and BRIC’s NYC Winter Jazz.
A Trip To The Moon’s lunar theme took shape when Applebaum discovered that the recordings of the Apollo Project broadcasts were open on the Internet Archive. Now small short pieces of the dialogue are incorporated into the different songs on the album. A bit like Oddjob worked with the field recordings of folk music for the record Folk, in a way that was also done by Bengt-Arne Wallin, Jan Johansson and others on the LP Adventures in jazz and folklore back in 1966.
Local NY blog Post-Trash has described Ghost Funk Orchestra’s sound as a “psychological odyssey of traditional sounds delivered in a non-traditional way”.
