Few have developed the Brazilian musical heritage like the Brazilian guitarist, pianist and composer Egberto Gismonti with his unique technique and his 10-, 12- and 14-string guitars.
From Amazonian indigenous batuque to Rio’s Carioca samba and choro, through frevo, baião, and forró, Gismonti captures the essence of the Brazilian musical soul. Raw but sophisticated, it is reflected in his personal vision, perfected through a series of musical languages in which classical western music and jazz play a significant role.
Gismonti’s musical career spans over five decades. Born in Rio de Janeiro to a Sicilian mother and Lebanese father, he began studying classical piano at the age of six. He studied at the Rio Conservatory before going to Paris to study under the legendary Nadia Boulanger. Boulanger encouraged Gismonti to write the Brazilian experience into his music.
On his first LP, Egberto Gismonti, released in 1969, he sang his own songs and collaborated with bossanova composer Paulo Sérgio Vale. Over the years, some of Egberto Gismonti’s most distinctive ensembles are his Brazilian group Academia de Danças, the duo with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos and the trio with bassist Charlie Haden and Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek.
In 2018, Gismonti was in Sweden and received a standing ovation during his visit at the Uppsala International Guitar Festival. Now this 76-year-old legendary musician is coming to Kungsgatan 63.
