Rooted in post-bop, Brooklyn-based, Chicago-born, vibraphonist and composer Joel Ross draws inspiration from a wide range of genres outside of jazz: hip-hop, church music and classical western music.
The Chicago elegance combines a great lyrical and melodic vein with a collective improvisational stance in its both equilibristic and thoughtful music.
The 2019 Blue Note debut KingMaker was hailed by The New York Times on the list of the best jazz of the year. On Joel Ross’s fourth solo album nublues, which came out earlier this year, the vibraphonist focuses on the melodic playing and interplay in his group with alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist Jeremy Corren, bassist Kanoa Mendenhall and drummer Jeremy Dutton.
Joel Ross grew up in Chicago’s southside, started playing drums at three but switched to vibra as a teenager. In recent years, Ross has collaborated with artists such as Makaya McCraven, Peter Evans, Gerald Clayton, Melissa Aldana and Wynton Marsalis & the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Stockholm jazz festival has the great honor to once again welcome this world vibraphonist back to Fasching. A musician who carries on the tradition from older masters like Lionel Hampton and Mike Mainieri into a contemporary jazz language.
