This concert is part of the collaboration Fasching X Selam
The cult band WITCH – acronym for We Intend To Cause Havoc – was Zambia’s biggest band during the 70s. With their mix of British blues, funk, psychedelic, garage rock and traditional Zambian music, the band paved the way for a genre of its own. Zamrock boiled and spread in Zambia through much thanks to this band during the time after the country’s liberation from Great Britain.
When WITCH was at its peak, the rioters needed a police escort to keep from being overwhelmed by excited fans who did their best to storm the shows – including throwing themselves from the stands onto the stage.
The band’s charismatic singer Emanyeo “Jagari” Chanda, whose nickname is a tribute to Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, is today the only remaining member from the original line-up. After long being a domestic affair, the band had a revival in 2012, not least after their records became popular abroad. In 2021, a documentary was also made about Jagari and the band.
Last year, Zango was released, the band’s first album in almost 40 years. Now W.I.T.C.H is coming to Fasching with the ill-concealed intention of causing mayhem.
