Along with Hailu Mergia and Mulatu Astatke, Dawit Yifru is considered one of the giants and great composers of Ethiopian jazz history, with a career spanning more than fifty years. His musical influence in Ethiopia has been so great that many consider him the creator of the entire modern Ethiopian music genre.
As the bandleader of the legendary Roha Band and Dahlak Band, Dawit Yifru has over the years worked with greats such as Muluken Melesse, Neway Debebe and Kennedy Mengesha and continues to motivate new generations of Ethiopian musicians with his dedication and love for music.
In April 2023, the self-titled vinyl Dawit Yifru was released on Ethiopian label Muzikawi and the first pressing quickly sold out. The album contains a collection of songs remastered from cassettes released in the 1970s and showcases the musical golden age that existed in Ethiopia.
