Close to the Herbie Hancock holy grail, is the verdict of Brittish UK Vibe about Tel Aviv-born, London-based jazz keyboardist and producer Yoni Mayraz’s debut LP Dybbuk Tse!, released this spring. With futuristic keyboard mats, driving jazz-funk over ethereal melodic lines from flute-sax-trumpet, Mayraz combines laid-back fusion with acid jazz and folk music in a warm cozy feel all its own.
The title Dybbuk Tse! alludes to a command used to expel a malevolent spirit from the body of a living person, and Yoni wants to help with an emotional exorcism through his music. If he succeeds, you’ll find out for yourself when Yoni Mayraz and the band goes on a launch tour in Great Britain and further through Europe where one of the stops will be at Fasching in Stockholm.
Greg Foat Group, diphthongs of Oddjob alongside Hancock’s Headhunter are sensed in Yoni Mayraz’s dance-friendly jazz fusion bouquet.
