An evening to remember one of the greatest ever in Swedish jazz – Bernt Rosengren. On stage this evening will be many fellow musicians from a long and incredibly productive musical life. Bass player Hans Backenroth is behind the initiative, and writes te following about his late colleague:
Bernt Rosengren was one of the country’s greatest musicians – regardless of genre – and one of the most important jazz voices in Europe for more than five decades. He was completely unaffected by trends, moving freely across genres where his heart led him and inspiring several generations of musicians.
A few years ago, for example, the Norwegian icon Jan Garbarek was asked which saxophonist he preferred to listen to and answered directly: Bernt Rosengren. Saxophonists like that don’t exist in New York, said Carla Bley when she played with the Radio Jazz Group in the 80s.
Bernt was constantly on the move and throughout the years sought out and played with new generations of musicians that he himself later became inspired by. On European soil he played over the years with Lars Gullin, Krzysztof Komeda, Doug Raney, Chet Baker, Horace Parlan, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and others.
He also received a wide range of awards, including the Golden Disc five times for the best jazz recording of the year and also received a Grammy.
He was born on Christmas Eve 1937 and passed away on May 15, 2023 at the age of 85, but he will always be relevant and continue to inspire with his music.
This evening we want to pay tribute to Bernt with a string of musicians from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, old colleagues of Bernt as well as musicians who were inspired by him! The evening will begin with Bernt’s last and most enduring quartet and end with a big band.
