After a number of acclaimed performances around Europe and North America with various big bands, Mats Holmquist is back at home. The project “A Tribute to Woody Shaw and more” will be, apart from tonight’s concert, Mats Holmquist’s tenth CD and tentatively the sixth on his American label Summit/MAMA Records.
In honor of the evening, he has celebrity company with him in the form of one of Europe’s foremost big bands, the Upper Austrian Jazz Orchestra. Over the years they have toured in a number of countries together with ditto established artists (Michael Gibbs, Kenny Wheeler, Richard Bona, etc), but this is the first time they visit Sweden for a week-long tour.
The project consists of eight of trumpet legend Woody Shaw’s most famous compositions in Mats Holmquist’s original interpretations: Rahsaan’s run, Theme for Maxine, Rosewood and others. Woody’s music can be described as “hard core jazz”, with lots of energy and genuine jazz feeling. A couple of Mats’ own compositions and other arrangements will also be performed during the evening.
