Kenny Garrett has had a central place in jazz since the 1970s. An undeniable emotional flair for melodic phrasing led him to collaborations with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey and Miles Davis. In 2006 he was awarded a Grammy for the album Five Peace Band Live with Chick Corea and John McLaughlin. In addition to this, Kenny Garrett has been nominated for the Grammy Award eight times.
The latest release Sounds from the Ancestors is a multi-faceted album, which defies the boundaries of jazz. It’s hardly surprising, as the alto saxophonist and composer counts Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye as significant influences. The album is characterized by intellectual clarity and an inventiveness that brings to mind Miles Davis’ approach to On the Corner. Garrett reconnects with the roots of his African ancestors, recited prayers, songs from the work fields, Yoruba chants and African drums.
