The Stockholm Jazz Orchestra has toured all over the world with its music for several decades. On their 18 records as well as a large number of radio shows, over the years they have collaborated with guests such as Bob Brookmeyer, Bob Mintzer, Yellowjackets, Jim McNeely, Maria Schneider, Monica Zetterlund to name a few. In 2003-2005 the band did several concerts at Fasching with guests Dick Oatts and Gary Smulyan from The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Now 20 years later, it’s time to celebrate trumpeter and orchestra leader Thad Jones and his music again with Dick Oatts as musical director.
Oatts has long been the musical director of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and also their lead alto saxophonist. A brilliant jazz soloist with the world as his field of work.
Thad Jones started with Count Basie in 1954 and stayed for almost a full decade before forming the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra with drummer Mel Lewis. The new big band had its first gig at the Village Vanguard in January 1966. The band continued as a Monday attraction at the Village Vanguard and eventually changed its name to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.
