With influences from both jazz and Latin American music, Louis Matute offers music that is both euphoric and reflective. His guitar creates space for emotions, colors, memories, and curiosity, where every note carries a wistful warmth, the elusive feeling of longing and beauty, which in Portuguese is called saudade. Matute’s obsession with Brazil gives the music a rhythmic power that makes the body move and the soul feel.
As a student of the renowned guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, Matute has developed an expression that freely moves between his European roots and Latin American musicality. His fourth album, Small Variations From The Previous Day (March 2024), is his most intimate yet and topped TSF Jazz’s year-end list. Here, sparkling improvisation and quiet reflection meet in a sound that is as dynamic as it is personal. “I’ve never written a melody without singing it at the same time,” says Matute, and it’s clearly audible in the music.
His sound world travels far, but always lands close. At Stockholm Jazz Festival, he leads his Large Ensemble – a close-knit band that moves with warmth, playfulness, and precision.
